The idea of living in a new country, exploring a different culture, and gaining a world-class education is incredibly exciting. But then a thought pops into your head that can quickly turn a dream into a daunting challenge: how am I going to afford it?

The cost of international education, from tuition to living expenses, can feel like an insurmountable barrier for many. Yet, here is the secret that many are only just starting to discover: studying in a stunning location like Malta is far more accessible than you might think.

With the right information, navigating the landscape of scholarships for international students becomes not a hurdle, but an empowering path to your future.

Let us dive into the various financial aid options that can help make your educational aspirations a reality, proving that quality education does not have to come with a high tuition fee.

Why Malta is a smart (and affordable) choice for your studies

Malta's growing appeal as an educational hub is tied directly to its unique combination of quality and value.

It is a place where you can find a top-notch learning environment within a vibrant, English-speaking European country. The island nation offers a rich history and culture, making it an immersive place to live, not just study.

Perhaps most importantly, the daily cost of living here is significantly lower when compared to other major cities across Europe, such as London, Paris, or Rome. This inherent affordability is the first layer of value, setting a strong foundation for your journey.

This baseline cost-effectiveness makes Malta a strategically sound choice for ambitious students.

Malta's Get Qualified Scheme: An excellent national incentive

Now, here is a truly game-changing opportunity that sets Malta apart from many other study destinations.

Beyond the institutional scholarships offered by GBS Malta, the government has created a powerful incentive to support higher education.

It is called the ‘Get Qualified Scheme,’ and it is a government-backed tax-credit initiative designed to aid both local and international students.

Think of it as a significant reward for successfully completing your studies and contributing to the Maltese economy. This scheme offers major financial benefits, providing a powerful incentive to invest in your future on the island.

It is a key part of the broader system of financial support for students in Malta.

How the Get Qualified Scheme works

The Get Qualified Scheme can sound complex, but it is actually a very powerful and straightforward concept.

It is a way for the government to support your education by giving you a substantial portion of your tuition fees back after you graduate and begin working in Malta via tax credits.

This turns your degree into a strategic, long-term investment. Here is how it works:

  • Who is eligible? This scheme is open to EU/EEA nationals and third-country nationals who become residents of Malta and are employed after their studies.
  • How does it work? First, you must successfully complete your GBS Malta programme. After you graduate and secure employment in Malta, you can apply for the scheme. You are eligible to apply after the two years of your studies after your graduation.
  • What do you get? The benefit is substantial: a tax credit worth up to 70% of your tuition costs for any bachelor’s or master’s programmes.
